PROFILE
“Based on Ancient
Commitment”
Beginning with the first Jambore Anak Jalanan (JAJ, “Street Kids Jamboree”)
in 1997, a group of volunteers made up of students, alumni and professionals
– who had served on the planning committee for JAJ – saw that one
of the essential needs for this generation of urban children, and especially
for street children of Jakarta, was education. Education is an indespensable
part of seeing children achieves a higher economic status and stronger character
to help them break out of the poverty cycle.
Based on an ancient commitment (without financial or legal support nor other
fix facilities, but with exited and pure hearts) Sahabat Anak (SA, “Child’s
Friend”) was born after a long period of learning the intricacies of working
together, the dynamics of ministry, the challenges of the reality of life on
the street, the complex character of children that grow up in the midst of those
challenges, a viable way to raise funds and a system to ensure integrity and
responsibility in the use and reporting of those funds, along with searching
for an informal curriculum that was best suited for the unique needs of the
children we serve. Currently, Sahabat Anak has established a routine activity
of “tutoring” (called “Bimbel”) for street children
in six areas of Jakarta – namely: Prumpung, Grogol, Cijantung, Gambir,
Manggarai and Senen.
SA has also developed relationships with two partner organizations that also
run Bimbels in Klender-Buaran and Depok. Additionally, there is a group from
Jatiasih that faithfully attend the Jamboree each year, but do not have a regular
Bimbel program.
Sahabat Anak’s Vision
Show street children that they are valuable as people created in the image of
God.
Sahabat Anak’s Mission
Involve as many people and groups as possible to care for street children and
be friends that show love at all times.
