Motivational Leadership
SITTING BY THE EDGE OF THE CHAIR WITH EYES SHINNING BRIGHTLY …
Some time ago, on May 16-17th in Cileungsi, Capacity Building, a dept handling Sahabat Anak (SA) volunteers held a capacity building as one of its programs to equip SA activists to be more courageous and stay focus in doing their activities.
Having “Motivational Leadership” as its theme, Mr. Puthut Rahardjo an Independent Consultant was asked to become Trainer. With quite long hours in training experience, this father of two explained to all participants (central and local SA Board, and operational staffs) about basic philosophy of self potential actualization.
“Inside human’s deepest heart, lies an inner unexploited strength. A remarkable strength never been dreamt before, a strength that will change life if risen, followed up and actualized. Therefore, compare yourself with only and only yourself every day”, said Mr. Puthut on his opening speech.
Day – 1
First module, participants were suggested to know themselves, by knowing and learning from experiences predicted to be successful. In this session, Mr. Puthut divided us into several groups whereby each person asked to share shortly to his group about his success experience.
From every group, Mr. Puthut asked for 1 story chosen as the best story, and for his/her to re-tell to every group about his/her success story and from this session Alles Saragi and Lina Tjindra were chosen as the best story teller. Both are members of SA Board.
Conclusion drawn from this session were how to develop self potential:
- Accept Yourself (know your strength)
- Respect Yourself (appreciate yourself from point no. 1)
- after accepting and respecting yourself, now Trust Yourself
- then finally to be able to have a good Self Control.
Next we surely can find out the very picture of our self and what we can do in life, according to our personal vision, mission ahead.
On the second module, participants were briefed with “Function and Part” of a serving Leader. What character should be had and what would be the success indicator. Mr. Puthut stressed that in actualizing the serving and leading as volunteers in SA, we need to know which element of leadership that can be our function and part as servants.
Right about dawn, Mr. Puthut ended day-1 training and went back to Jakarta, before, he mentioned some ‘home works’ that should be handed to him tomorrow. That afternoon, first timer Cileungsi visitors (cileungsi is a education and training facilities for teenagers for farming, live-stocks, and other skills) tracked through the paddy rice field, farm, river and local neighborhood.
After dinner, all participants gathered in the library to do their ‘home work’. One of the most exciting home works was how to visualize with picture our dream of 5 years from now. By having tabloids, magazines and newspapers, we were so busy looking for suitable representative pictures to visualize 4 things out of 8 given: family, personal, religious, health, society, social life, career/money and knowledge. Laughter often heard from jokes thrown upon each other in strew of papers on the floor, commenting each creation. It was really fun!
Day – 2
Taking “To become a More Appreciative Person” as theme, this was my favourite learning day. Participants were taught to be able to self concentrate and self communicate to others’ strength and find a grand value from a sincere appreciation.
Divided into several groups again, we were to give a sincere and honest appreciation to the fellow member of the group, one by one.
This was the key of how we were being fond of, and can develop the skill in giving a positive feed back, considering that one of human’s basic needs is to be appreciated.
A very wise words that we find hard to forget in this session (sung with ‘frenzy’ motion) was: “If we keep our customer happy... They will keep us in the business!”
The closing was also very cool and interesting. This time all 30 participants were divided into two big groups and we were asked to do a presentation on the clipping board that we had made.
Every participant took turns in presenting his/her clipping board by first yelling out our famous shout out (that night) ‘Sitting by the edge of the chair with eyes shinning brightly, lets welcome our speaker.”, while tapping on the chair.
Every participant called, must mention his positive points in front of everybody with loud and clear voice, then presented his/her 5 years from now clipping board in 1 minute!
It was a very serious yet funny presentation and it was a very impressive closing agenda. “I’m certain that I can!”, was the last sentence of every participants’ presentation and always followed by a loud ‘Ameeen’ by fellow friend from the group.
“You got to have faith in yourself when others don’t. That’s what makes you a winner”
