Vicky Silvyanie _ Coordinator – 2009 SA Jamboree Committee
“You don’t need to wait to be rich …
to help marginal children”
Joined SA three years ago, Vicky said learned a lot from what she experienced as a coordinator of 13th SA Jamboree.
The writer (SA) had an opportunity to interview Vicky after the event. Among her schedule as an assistant lawyer. Vicky (VS) told SA how she was interested and finally took part in spreading SA movement.
SA : When was the committee formed?
VS : The committee was formed last February, and it structure was completed in March. After every function in place, we started to make plans and preparations.
SA : What made you accepted the role?
VS : Actually there were other capable candidates, but I accepted the responsibility in February because I realized the SA Steering Committee put their trust in me. Plus I thought probably it was it should be. HIS WAY. But I could not boast for myself because we could only achieve this by team work of all friends and volunteers in the committee.
SA : How many people were actually involved during this year’s Jamboree?
VS : About 80 people, consisted oforganizer committee and crews such as event guests, security, tools, medic team, etc.
SA : How do you feel now, after everything is over?
VS : I’m relieved! Overall, the event went successful and well coordinated. The team work was great. Especially since some of the members are working and have families. With their limited time, resources and funding, I think we’ve been given to the max.
SA : Why did the committee chose “Me and My Mother Land” as theme?
VS : SA was keen to highlight the issue of birth certificate for marginal children. The right of basic identity is acknowledged by the 1989 UN Convention for Children rights.
Plus this year’s jamboree was held during the legislative and presidential elections. We witnessed some Indonesians turned apathetic towards the government. We also noticed that less children know about the national heritage. That’s how we came into conclusion that “Me and My Mother Land” was the best theme for this year’s Jamboree.
SA : Ok, last question. As a volunteer yourself, what’s your overall opinion about SA?
VS : I think SA is a very interesting organization. It attracts and teaches people to give with sincerely. We don’t need to wait to be rich to be able to donate. That’s what I saw, experienced and learned. I hope SA movement will spread more nationwide.
